May 2004 Trip to South Africa
Welcome to the Virtual Trip to South Africa!

In May of 2004 I was fortunate enough to spend two weeks in South Africa admiring, studying, and enjoying Haworthias in the wild.  I left Denver, Colorado on May 3rd for Atlanta, where I boarded a South African Airways plane in the morning of May 4th, for the 14 hour flight to Cape Town.  Because of the time change I arrived at 7:30 AM on May 5th.  There I met my traveling companion for the next two weeks, Scott McDermott, from Tucson.  Scott came via Chicago and London and arrived 15 minutes after I did.  We had never met before, but both are Haworthia aficionados, so we knew that we would have a good time.  We were guided by Gerhard Marx, who made the trip wonderfully pleasant with his wit, knowledge, and contagious laughter.  We left South Africa on May 19, and Scott and Gerhard had become a lifelong  friends.  Scott was taken from us when a speeding drunk driver crashed into his car on Sept 25, 2005.  To follow our trip, click on a link to one of the days and see what we did that day.  Any photo can be enlarged with a click.
