18 May 2004 Trip to South Africa

We got up early and met Kobus Venter at his house at 7:00 AM in very thick fog.  He drove us over Sir Lowry's Pass to a nearby Farm.  Here we were welcomed by the farmer and his wife for tea and then visited two sites, one on the road (known) and a second unknown site inside the farm.  We saw Haworthia mirabilis triebneriana at both sites.

Next we were off to NW of Napier where we found Haworthia mirabilis var. badia, where it is being shaded out of existence by exotic pines.

Next we stopped north of Napier where we got to see Haworthia maraisii var. maraisii.

Then off to Shuitsberg, at the hill across from the farmhouse.  Here we saw Haworthia mirabilis var. beukmannii at its type locality.  We also saw Euphorbia crispa, and Norena, a bulb with the pink flowers and Aloe glauca.

Next we stopped at nearby Nethercourt where we found Haworthia mirabilis var. beukmannii at the farm in an area that had recently been burnt and again we found it across the road.

Next was a new spot, near Grayton.   Here we found many nice Haworthia mirabilis var. beukmannii  plants.

Next stop was a bit before we reached  Grayton.  We stopped at a quarry where were we saw more beautiful Haworthia mirabilis var. triebneriana.

After passing through Grayton we stopped south of town and looked at more Haworthia mirabilis var. triebneriana just beside the road.

Last stop was at Brekraal at dusk.  Here along the river was a huge rock covered with millions of Haworthia mirabilis var. triebneriana.  Then in darkness we drove back, had dinner with Kobus and family and then spent our last South African night in Cape Town at the Century City Holiday Inn.
