12 May 2004 Trip to South Africa

Today we started early and at our first stop we saw Dioscorea hemicrypta, along the road south of Volmed.   Here we also found the elephant bush Portulacaria afra.

We next went to Moerasrivier, very near Saffronrivier.   Here we found many beautiful huge Haworthia emelyaes, some of which had been eaten in the center by some unknown creature.  We also saw a small herd of Springbok here.

We next stopped at Witkliprug (white pebble ridge)  We saw some great plants here, Senecio scaposus, Conophytum truncatum blooming, and some nice Haworthia emelyaes v emelyaes (GM260)

Here we went to the “Herold” location of H emelyae v emelyae (GM259) up the road from Witclubrub.  There were many beautiful Haworthia emelyae var emelyae "picta type emelyaes" here.  I was also able to get a nice photograph of the beautiful Cotyledon orbiculata.

Next we visited the Herold Haworthia outeniquensis site, where we also saw a great amount of  Haworthia outeniquensis and Aloe lineata var. muirii

We then stopped at Mitkiesulei, and here saw our first scruffy and dirty H. bayeri scabrifolia.

Back towards town, we stopped at Dysseldorp.  Here we saw Haworthia truncata everywhere, more Massonia, and some Gasteria brachyphylla.  We also saw Aloe humilis and a blooming Duvalia caespitosa.

We then quickly stopped on the other side of Dysseldorp where we saw the hairy form of Haworthia truncata.  It was quite hard to find and we saw only two plants!  This area had nice population of Tylecodon and Crassula falcata.

At DeRust we saw H. bayeri, Aloe mrostyana and Pachypodium bispinosum.

After a long hard day, we stopped at looked at Mrs. Lategan's garden, a beautiful private garden of cactus and succulents over 60 years old!
