08 May 2004 Trip to South Africa
![]()
We awoke on the morning of May 8th to the clamor of a noisy flock of Hadeda Ibis on the front lawn. After a quick breakfast from the Swellerdam market, we drove to Heidelberg were we saw Haworthia marginata and several other interesting succulents.
We next drove Southwest of Riversdale where we saw Haworthia retusa and Haworthia magnifica var magnifica. We then drove to Vermaaklikheid to the type locality of the beautiful Haworthia mirabilis var. paradoxa growing in clefts in white limestone cliffs.
After getting our first flat we changed our tire then drove Northeast of Riversdale to look at three more retusa like Haworthias. On the north end of a long ridge we found our first, Haworthia magnifica var. magnifica “asperula”then, 500 meters away was Haworthia retusa var geraldii. Last on this same ridge and 500 meters further was Haworthia retusa var. fauchii which grows with Haworthia minima. Then after a dusk trip to an area beyond the Riversdale airport (where we found nothing) we returned to town, ate dinner and spent the night in the Riverside Municipal Chalets.
