07 May 2004 Trip to South Africa![]()
Today we got out of bed early in Cape Town and drove on the N2 to Swellendam where we met Gerhard Marx who had driven in from Oudtshoorn. Gerhard was our constant companion, guide, and counselor for the next 10 days. His gentle good humor and vast knowledge of all of South Africa's plants, animals, and geology was a source of constant amazement for me. Virtually every plant we found or saw was because Gerhard knew where it was or knew where to look. Allthough Scott and I occasionally spotted a Haworthia, it was Gerhard who led us to the locals where they grew, and in 95% of the time it was Gerhard who found the Haworthias we were looking for first. Gerhard took us to the back of the town where we rented a cabin (chalet) at the Swellendam municipal chalets, in a beautiful quiet spot. We then sat off to see our first Haworthia.
